Frequently Asked Questions

Do GRP / fibreglass products require much maintenance?

Fibreglass requires minimum care, it is both durable as well as fade resistant and suitable for hot or cold climates.

How strong is fibreglass?

Because of the high surface area to weight ratio fibreglass is extremely strong.

How do I clean FRP / fibreglass products?

Apply a neutral cleaner with a soft sponge or cloth. Do not use harsh or abrasive materials this will damage the gel coat surface layer.

How do I remove fine surface scratches from GRP products?

Use fine scratch removers or polish to restore the product to its original finish.

What is the difference between a male and a female mould?

A female mould the desired finish will be on the outside of the mould where as a male mould the desired finish will be on the inside.

What are the benefits of using fibreglass?

Fibreglass is waterproof, lightweight and has high tensile strength has good thermal insulation properties and longevity. It is chemical and stain resistant. Fibreglass is easily repaired and Corrosion resistant.

Is glass fibre flammable?

The glass fibres themselves are not flammable. The polymer matrix that they are embedded in may or may not be.

Is fibreglass a thermal insulator?

Yes, because it does not easily absorb heat, so it cannot carry it from one point to another.

What are the different types of fibreglass & resins?

There are 2 types of glass fibres, E-glass and S-glass. S-glass is chemically different, stronger and much more expensive. S-glass is usually only used in special applications in the aerospace industry. E-glass is most commonly used as chop strand mat but can also be woven into a variety of cloths.

There are 4 types of resin used with fibreglass – polyester, vinylester, epoxy and phenolic.

Does fibreglass require a special type of paint?

Fiberglass does not require a special type of paint, but the application you’re using it for might.
